UI/UX and Communications Designer, Part-Time

📋 Description

• Blend user experience design, visual design, and strategic communications to translate complex technology and AI initiatives into engaging digital experiences supporting VA’s mission of improving Veterans’ lives.

• Support PDS, OCTO, and CAIO leadership by creating website designs, digital experiences, visual storytelling, and communications materials that enhance VA’s technology and AI brand presence.

• Thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment, delivering polished design assets that support leadership communications, digital products, and strategic initiatives.

• Design and maintain user-focused web experiences across PDS, OCTO, and CAIO digital properties.

• Improve website usability, accessibility, and engagement through redesign and content organization.

• Create compelling visualizations from technical data and program metrics to support leadership decision-making and public communication.

• Collaborate with portfolio leads, product managers, and stakeholders to design user-centered digital experiences.

• Conduct user research to enhance workflows, interfaces, and digital tools.

• Ensure designs meet Section 508 accessibility requirements and align with the VA.gov Design System.

• Work closely with leadership, communications teams, and product teams to support evolving priorities.

• Participate in Agile workflows, design reviews, and stakeholder discussions to deliver high-quality solutions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree with 8+ years of experience

• 7+ years of professional design experience

• 5+ years of UI/UX design experience

• Strong portfolio showcasing digital design, visual storytelling, and UX/UI work

• Proficiency in design and prototyping tools like InDesign, Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, Sketch, or similar

• Experience creating data visualizations and visual communications for technical or executive audiences

• Knowledge of Section 508 accessibility standards

• Excellent communication skills to convey complex technical concepts through visuals and narratives
